As an extension to the regular workshops, I am temporarily* offering 1-on-1 custom lighting workshops to select individuals. These workshops are conducted on a 1-on-1 basis. You will be the only student so you have my complete and undivided attention. Though I call it a "Custom Lighting Workshop" the workshop is not limited to lighting but instead is tailored to whatever you want to learn, however you want it. Prior to the workshop we will review your specific goals and I will put together a program to cover the lessons and material to accomplish those goals. You can ask me anything and we can go anywhere. We can cover lighting to post-processing to whatever! The sky is the limit.
Why am I doing this? Personally I've always liked teaching. I had a blast at the last workshop. Part of my function at my last job was to train our clients on using core features of our (royalty accounting) software. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and most of all I enjoy doing that on an individual-to-individual level. That's also why I keep my regular workshops so small.
What does the workshop include? The workshop includes model, makeup artist, wardrobe, studio time (or location), and lights/modifiers. Scheduling is flexible depending on my availability. We can start as early as you want or as late as you want. The duration of the workshop will last 6 hours from the time we start.
Who is this workshop for? It's for anyone who truly wants to improve specific photography skills quickly and effectively. It's for the photographer who is tired of sifting through millions of pointless forum threads for answers to very specific questions. It's for the average Joe who is frustrated that fellow photographers won't tell you how they achieved a specific shot. It's for the beginner portraitist who wants to see what it's like to work with a model. It's for the weekend warrior who just wants to know how to use off-camera flash. It's also for seasoned pros that want to know underlying techniques to achieve the specific looks in my pictures. Most of all it's for those who want the experience, to see for yourself how it's done and to do it for yourself. No instruction manual, website, lighting diagram or blog can substitute the experience of learning by doing. As much as I love blogging, there's only so much I can convey through words. There are things that I do that I'm not even conscious of. Sometimes you have to be "there" to experience what's actually happening. All of it is a part of "getting the shot". And all of it will be available to you at the 1-on-1 custom lighting workshop. But basically the workshop is for anyone/everyone!
What topics can we cover? If you follow this blog, you know that I consider nearly everything under the sun related to photography; even the soft skills related to working with models or strategy in working with clients. Nothing is off-topic at a 1-on-1 custom lighting workshop with me. We can shoot 35mm or medium format. We can shoot film or digital. We can shoot natural light or with strobes. We can talk color profiles and calibration. Seriously. Nothing is off-topic.
What do you need to do? Nothing. Everything is taken care of from the model to the clothes. All you have to do is show up. You don't even have to bring your camera if you don't want to (though I'd highly recommend it). Just come with intent questions and push yourself to learn. I guarantee you will have fun! My workshops are rigorous but we always have fun (see Mexican dude in background of picture):
