Beauty Retouch Tutorial

Jaydn. Hasselblad H3DII-31. 1/500th f/11 ISO @210mm.

Beauty Retouch Tutorial from Charles LUCIMA on Vimeo.

This is a tutorial for a basic beauty retouch. In the 18 minutes of the video I quickly go over my basic beauty techniques:

-dodge and burn
-healing brush
-clone stamping (w/ different blend modes)
-liquify
-curves
-desaturation
-levels
-masking
-selective highlights

This is the first time I've made a tutorial and this is the first time I've unveiled any techniques publicly as it pertains to my techniques. I've recorded my actual retouch and then subsequently narrated my actions as I rewatch the video. The video is in double-time (2x original speed) and for whatever reason, QuickTime did not record the part of my screen with the menu bar so you can't see the menu bar above. Fortunately I don't use the menu bar too often.

I've created this video as a promotional video for my workshops. I teach group workshops either from my studio or soon with an organization and also conduct private workshops either in the studio or via iChat/Skype. I cover everything from prep-to-post. This means if you wanted to do a workshop with me you have a lot of options to attain whatever lesson/information/knowledge you need in a custom format. We can cover anything and everything from shooting to workflow to retouching to whatever. Literally anything. If you're local I can even source a model and a makeup artist for the private workshop.

Scheduling for workshops depends on my workload with other clients but I typically have weekends available for workshops as well as studio rentals. Private workshops conducted via Skype and iChat are easier to schedule since there's more flexibility with squeezing a few hours in here and there on a daily basis.

If you would like to inquire for more details about workshops please email me at charles@lucima.com

Enjoy the tutorial! :)

  1. Great tutorial! I didn't see it on your flickr or blog, but it'd be interesting to see a side by side of the finished product and the original. Also, when you were using your action, you masked out a portion to see where you'd painted (the untouched areas showed up as a red overlay on the image)...would you mind saying how you did that?

Thanks, keep up the great work!

  2. Alt-click your mask and it'll show you in red what you've masked :)

    Cheers!

  3. Thanks for posting, awesome tutorial!

I was just wondering, when you created the curves adjustment layer and you said you selected a few target points from the image to adjust, which then appeared on the curve line as you clicked various parts of the image...how did you select them? When I tried, similarly to in your video the point moves about on the graph line as I hover over my image, but I can't lock a certain target point onto the graph!

    Thanks,
    Jess

  4. When you click on the actual image with the "targeted adjustment tool" (finger slider thingy) then it plots points on your graph :)

  5. Hm, I'm sure that didn't work when I tried it, but I shall try again just in case! Thanks for the reply!

  6. Dude, how many pots of black coffee did you drink in order to go that fast?!

Ok, all kidding aside this was a really great overview & a refresher from your workshop.

So now a question. Would you also recommend desaturating an image if it were a fashion shoot where the clothing is paramount? In this case I would be talking about an editorial not a catalog shoot.

  7. If it's an editorial fashion shoot then I would say that you have more "liberties" with your editing including color. Though it really depends on your client at the end of the day.
